Official papers of Benjamin Franklin Flanders pertain primarily to duties performed while he was a special agent for the U. S. Treasury Dept. They include records of his transactions, correspondence with his assistants, claims of confiscated cotton, invoices and affidavits. A few papers deal with the political situation at the time. Civil War papers represent a combination of business and politics, with the correspondence of prominent individuals including Abraham Lincoln, Generals Sheridan, Hancock, and Banks, Thomas J. Durant (a political associate), and Secretary of War Edward Canby. Correspondence with administrative leaders during the Reconstruction period provide insight into the political situation at the time. Other papers concern the manner in which Confederate property was managed after the war. Later papers concern the latter part of his career and include certificates of appointments given to him by Presidents Grant and Hayes.
